Breast Reconstruction In Minneapolis St. Paul, MN
After a mastectomy, many women choose to have breast reconstruction surgery to restore the breast to a more normal contour and balance with the opposite breast. This is an increasingly selected procedure, and is often covered, at least partially, by insurance. Dr. McCue performs all types of breast reconstruction surgery, by referral from other physicians. If you have been referred to Dr. McCue for breast reconstruction, this page will provide basic information on breast reconstruction.
Each breast reconstruction is unique, and depends on many factors, including the nature of the mastectomy procedure, and can be complicated by radiation treatments following the mastectomy. A number of different techniques are used, depending on the individual situation.
- Implant Based Reconstruction – In most cases, implants are used to restore breast shape. These can be either saline or silicone implants. In some cases, where sufficient underlying structures and skin are present, an implant can be used, along with tissue expansion to create the new breast contours without using tissue from elsewhere on the body. Dr. McCue is familiar with all types of implant-based reconstruction, as well as what to expect in the long term, and has authored articles and textbook chapters on the subject.
- Tissue Based Reconstruction – Where insufficient tissue exists on the chest wall to support an implant, a flap of skin, fat and muscle from the abdomen, back, or other area is transferred to the area. This flap is tunneled under the skin and remains attached to its blood supply. An implant may also be used underneath the transferred tissue to add volume to the breast.
- Free Flap Breast Reconstruction – Instead of transferring a flap that remains attached to its blood supply, another method is to detach the flap completely before moving it. Microvascular surgery techniques are used to connect blood vessels to the flap to supply blood. Although this technique can be the most time consuming, it results in the most natural breast reconstruction in the long term. Dr. McCue has the training and experience needed for the required microvascular surgery.
- Breast Symmetry Procedures – To create a good symmetry between your reconstructed breast and the opposite breast, breast lift surgery, or breast reduction or augmentation of the opposite breast may aid in equalizing the breasts. These additional procedures for symmetry are covered by insurance.
