Comparing Saline and Silicone Implants

Statistics show that breast augmentation is the most popular type of breast surgery. It helps women enhance both their shape and self-confidence.

If you’re planning a breast augmentation, one of the first questions you’ll consider during your consultation is silicone versus saline implants. Both have benefits, so the best choice comes down to your unique needs and goals.

At McCue Plastic Surgery, board-certified breast augmentation specialist Dr. Jonathan McCue and our caring team provide patient-centered care to ensure you understand all aspects of your breast augmentation.

Today’s blog covers the saline versus silicone debate, including how they’re different and who might want each one.

Saline vs. Silicone: What’s the Difference?

The biggest differences between saline and silicone implants are their composition and how they feel.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are actually part silicone. The outer shell is made of a silicone material. Dr. McCue inserts the empty shell in the chest and then fills the shell with a sterile saltwater (saline) solution, although some saline implants come pre-filled.

Silicone Implants

Made with a cohesive silicone gel, these implants mimic the feel of natural breast tissue. They’re pre-filled before insertion.

While both types can provide excellent results, silicone implants are the most popular option today due to their natural look and feel.

Pros and Cons of Saline Implants

Saline implants offer some unique benefits:

  • Smaller Incision: Since the implant goes into your chest as a flat shell, it requires only a small incision.
  • Saline Safety: Saline is a natural substance that your body can absorb without harm should an implant rupture occur.
  • Adjustability: In some cases, for example, in a breast reconstruction that includes implants, Dr. McCue can place a remote injection port. This port allows for volume adjustment and fine-tuning before removing the port.

However, some drawbacks include:

  • It may feel firmer and less natural than silicone
  • Only one shape (round)
  • Increased risk of rippling (when implant folds are visible under the skin)
  • Less natural movement

Pros and Cons of Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are the most popular choice for a few reasons, including:

  • Shape Options: Round or teardrop-shaped
  • Natural Feel: Feel very much like real breast tissue
  • Natural Appearance: Often have a more natural appearance

Some potential drawbacks of silicone implants may include:

  • Require a larger incision
  • You need regular monitoring to detect silent ruptures
  • More expensive
