There’s no doubt that losing extra body fat can bring on some big changes — most of them positive. But, depending on how you feel about your current breast size, you could be either very pleased or highly unhappy to learn that weight loss often leads to a breast volume reduction.
In this blog, our experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan McCue, discusses how your breasts can change as you lose weight.
How Weight Loss Affects Breast Size
Breast changes after weight loss depend on a few individual factors.
Amount of fatty tissue
As you lose fat, you lose it all over your body. Naturally, that includes your breasts. Although every woman has fat in her breasts, it’s mixed with glandular tissue. The proportions vary with each woman and are tied to genetics.
If you have a lot of glandular tissue (known as dense breast tissue), you might lose less breast volume. But if your breasts have a higher proportion of fat, you could experience dramatic volume loss.
How your body sheds weight
Each woman loses weight in a unique pattern. Some women notice major fat loss in their face, hips, or belly, while others may suddenly realize their bra is too big. If you tend to shed weight in your upper body quickly, it’s likely you’ll see reduced breast volume.
Other Factors That Contribute to Breast Changes
Your breasts may look smaller than before, even if you don’t lose much volume. This can happen because weight loss may affect skin elasticity. If you lose a significant amount of weight, and you’ve carried that weight a long time, your skin might not be able to bounce back. This may lead to stretching and sagging, making your breasts look smaller.
What You Can Do About Breast Volume Loss
You can help guard against breast sagging by wearing a supportive undergarment while losing weight. It’s hard to prevent volume loss, but there are procedures to help restore your appearance.
As an elite breast surgeon, Dr. McCue regularly performs procedures like breast augmentation and breast lift. These procedures can match your breasts to your newly slim body — and give you a great confidence boost, too.
